Lief Ellis has a diverse career that encompasses music composition, electronic performance, educator and administrator. His formal education is in music composition. He received a Bachelor of Music from Radford University and received a Master of Music, and an Artist's Diploma, from The
Hartt School (University of Hartford).
Lief Ellis's recent work as a composer involves a commission from the Icelandic/American Amaranth Duo. The duo, consisting of
Icelandic violinist Geirþrúður Ása Guðjónsdóttir and American guitarist Christopher Ladd, commissioned Lief to write a duet for them to premiere on their first international tour. Lief has also recently collaborated with Ken Steen and the Foot in the Door ensemble during the Dark Days Music Festival in Reykjavík Iceland. During this collaboration Lief composed and performed a quadraphonic electronic part to accompany the Foot in the Door ensemble’s performance of Ken Steen’s Depo Flux. In 2013 Lief
created a new electronic score for José Limon’sThe Winged, restaged by Nina Watt. That same year, Lief also made an appearance as composer/performer on a multi-media work about the Connecticut River with his wife Kathryn Swanson. In 2012 Lief accompanied Eldon Loblein in a recital of Eldon’s music. Lief provided videography that reacted to the music utlizing Jitter. Other past compositions and collaborative projects have included the creation of hybrid instruments and the transformation of commercial hardware into dynamic MAX/MSP-based musical interfaces, multiple performances of The Rings of Yggdrasill by the Hartt School Bass Ensemble (directed by Robert Black), a
series of interactive installation pieces presented at the Hartford Art School, as well as collaborations with choreographer Katie Stevinson-Nollet, composer Alphonse Izzo, and composer Matt Sargent. He has a CD available on iTunes with works performed by guitarist Christopher Ladd. Lief was awarded the Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Hartford in 2014. He’s won awards and honorable mentions from composition competitions including the Southeastern Composer’s League and the International Soceity of Bassists. He has been a charter member of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, President of the Studio of Electronic Music Inc. and Director of the Hartford New Music Festival. Lief
Ellis currently holds the position of Performing Arts Technology Manager at The Hartt School as well as holding

Solar Harley Project October 15, 2010
Many motorcycles do not have a cigarette lighter adapter which leaves a lot of riders without power for their phone or other electronic devices. Lief Ellis mounted our 2 Watt solar panel on the back seat of his Harley to solve this problem.
He used outdoor speaker wire to extend the solar panels connection to the circuit box under the gas tank bra and the circuit box to our USB battery. From there, the battery feeds the phone on the handle bars. To do this project, you’ll need:
-One or two, 2 Watt Solar panels
-Switchable Mini USB Circuit Box
-V11 USB Battery
